An anemometer is an instrument used to measure air velocity. Its operating principle involves placing a thin metal wire in the fluid stream and passing an electric current through it to heat the wire, raising its temperature above that of the surrounding fluid; hence, such an anemometers are referred to as “hot-wire” anemometers. When the fluid flows past the wire in a perpendicular direction, it carries away some of the wire’s heat, causing its temperature to drop.
