Lithium batteries are widely used in a variety of electronic devices—such as laptops, smartphones, and backup power supplies—thanks to their long cycle life, lightweight design, and, most importantly, their environmental friendliness. Meanwhile, negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistors play a crucial role in lithium‑battery systems by providing precise temperature measurement and control; their resistance decreases as temperature rises, helping to prevent overheating.
Currently, the conventional and widely used NTC thermistors are manual plug‑in types: they require manual soldering, followed by attaching the thermistor leads to the battery cell, and finally securing them with thermal adhesive. Today, we’d like to introduce a surface‑mount NTC thermistor, which offers additional advantages when applied to lithium‑ion batteries.

Chip-type NTC thermistor
Compared with through-hole thermistors, chip‑type NTC thermistors are roughly one‑tenth the size and weight of the latter. When used in electronic products, they can reduce the overall footprint by at least 40% to 60% and cut the weight by 60% to 80%. They also minimize electromagnetic and radio‑frequency interference, facilitating automation and boosting production efficiency. As a result, costs can be lowered by 30% to 50%, while saving on materials, energy, equipment, labor, and time.
Lithium‑battery protection board circuit with surface‑mount NTC thermistors Structure It encompasses numerous components: the charging circuit, the discharging circuit, a control chip, multiple resistor–capacitor elements, several MOSFET switching devices, an NTC thermistor, four diodes, two Zener diodes, a fuse, and a potentiometer.
Advantages of chip-type NTC thermistors:
High density, small volume, and lightweight;
Excellent moisture resistance, high stability, and high reliability;
Strong vibration resistance, low solder joint defect rate, and excellent high-frequency performance.
How does a surface-mount NTC thermistor operate?
Battery voltage and circuit current are monitored using multiple resistor–capacitor components—comprising thirty resistors and twenty-three capacitors—and the charging and discharging circuits are switched on or off via four MOSFET switching devices. A thermistor is connected in series between several of the resistor–capacitor components and the battery.
Using chip‑style NTC thermistors offers several advantages: incorporating these modern chip‑type NTC thermistors into lithium batteries significantly reduces manufacturing cycle time and helps prevent unnecessary issues, such as short circuits, wire breakage, or component displacement—problems that can lead to substantial errors in temperature measurement and even trigger safety incidents.
Lithium batteries equipped with the new thermistor are more reliable and efficient than plug-in types in temperature monitoring and other applications, while also being smaller, more convenient, and more practical.
