Steps for Selecting a Temperature Sensor
1. Thoroughly understand the measurement applications and requirements.
•How quickly will the temperature change? Determine an appropriate response time.
• How long is the deployment period, and how maintainable are the sensors? Choose sensor types that are durable enough to minimize maintenance.
•What level of accuracy is required? Consider the impact of sensor accuracy on the overall measurement accuracy.
2. Determine the temperature range you must measure.
• Select a sensor type that operates outside the possible temperature range.
• Consider each type of linearization that meets your range requirements; within your range of interest, select the type with the strongest linear response to enhance the accuracy of voltage or resistance-to-temperature conversion.
3. Consider the environment in which the sensor will be deployed.
• Select an appropriate sheath material to resist any chemical exposure.
• Determine whether isolation is required to prevent ground loops or noise.
• If the sensors are exposed to vibration or abrasion, ensure they are capable of withstanding such conditions.
4. Consider how to install the sensor and select an appropriate mounting method to maximize thermal coupling.
5. Select the necessary measurement hardware to condition, acquire, analyze, and display/save temperature signals.
Temperature Sensor Characteristics
Use the following characteristics to define the functionality and performance of temperature sensors. These apply to all types of temperature sensors, though certain caveats and edge cases exist. When selecting a sensor, understand how each characteristic affects measurement accuracy and ensure that the chosen sensor closely matches your project’s requirements.
Temperature range
The temperature range of a sensor defines the temperatures at which it can operate safely and deliver accurate measurements. Each type of thermocouple has a specific temperature range, which depends on the properties of the metals used to construct it. RTDs offer a narrower temperature range in exchange for superior linearity and accuracy, while thermistors provide the broadest temperature range but with very high sensitivity. By understanding the full temperature range, you can expose the sensor to elevated temperatures, helping to prevent damage while ensuring more reliable measurement results.
