A portable electric water cup looks much like a standard insulated mug, with the key difference being the addition of a heating mechanism. This heating system comprises a heating element and a control unit for regulating it.

NTC thermistors are used in portable electric water cups as both heating elements and temperature‑control devices, functioning as “switches” that integrate sensing, heating, and switching functions. When current passes through the element, its temperature rises; once the Curie point is exceeded, the resistance increases, thereby limiting further current rise. As the current decreases, the element’s temperature drops, and the reduction in resistance causes the circuit current to increase again, leading to a rise in temperature—this cycle repeats continuously. Consequently, the device maintains the temperature within a specified range while also acting as a switch. Leveraging this resistance‑temperature characteristic, it can be employed as a heating source.

Compared with insulated mugs, portable electric water bottles effectively address this issue—keeping beverages hot for an extended period, though they will eventually cool down.

Today, we’ll talk about the NTC thermistor most commonly used in portable electric water cups—the small‑diameter enameled wire NTC thermistor.

Small‑diameter enameled wire NTC thermistors are currently available in standard wire diameters of Ø0.18 mm and Ø0.3 mm, as well as in various other wire gauges, all encapsulated in epoxy. Standard resistance values include 50 kΩ and 10 kΩ, with tolerances of 1%, 2%, or 3%. B‑values range from 3950 to 3435 to 3380. Head diameters are offered in sizes of 1.2 mm, 1.3 mm, 1.4 mm, 1.5 mm, 1.6 mm, 1.7 mm, 1.8 mm, 1.9 mm, and 2.0 mm. To meet diverse application requirements, custom designs can be tailored to customer specifications.
