What is an RTD sensor?
RTDs stand for resistance temperature detectors; they measure temperature by means of electrical resistance, which increases as temperature rises.
RTDs are typically made of platinum, nickel, or copper. RTD specifications include the base resistance value and the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR). The base resistance refers to the nominal resistance of the RTD at 0°C for nickel and platinum, or at 25°C for copper‑based devices. Depending on the material, it generally ranges from 10 to several thousand ohms (Ω), with 100 Ω being the most common.
The resistivity coefficient is crucial for measuring devices that account for temperature variations. The resistance value varies with temperature; based on the increase in resistance (in ohms), the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) is used to determine the temperature rise (in °C).

RTD sensor Advantages
RTD sensors have many advantages.
· Highly accurate
· High repeatability
· Consistency
· Provides accurate measurements even in extreme environments
· Long-term stability
· Platinum RTDs are suitable for a wider temperature range.
· Over time, it is the most accurate and stable (compared to thermocouples and thermistors)
Typical response times range from 0.5 to 5 seconds, which does not qualify as real-time; however, many applications do not require immediate responsiveness, making RTD an ideal solution. Industries well-suited for RTD include automotive, marine, white goods, HVACR, and other industrial applications.
What role does the temperature sensor play in this?
The temperature sensor is connected to the PLC to continuously monitor the temperature inside the incubator and transmit the data to the PLC. The sensing element of the temperature probe is positioned in the air within the incubator, ensuring it does not come into contact with any objects or the chamber walls. It provides real-time temperature monitoring. On the control panel, users can set the desired temperature range for the incubator by specifying upper and lower limits. When the probe detects a temperature below the lower limit, the heating fan is activated to raise the temperature; conversely, the refrigeration compressor is engaged to lower the temperature.
