What are the different types of thermocouples?

Thermocouples come in various metal or “grade” combinations. The most common are the base-metal thermocouples of types J, K, T, E, and N. There are also special types known as noble-metal thermocouples, including types R, S, and B. The highest‑temperature thermocouple types are refractory thermocouples, such as types C, G, and D.

What exactly is a thermocouple? How does a thermocouple work?

Before selecting a thermocouple, we need to address the following questions: 1) What is the temperature range you wish to measure, and what are the upper and lower limits? 2) Which object’s temperature do you intend to measure? The first question will help you categorize the application.
