What exactly is a thermocouple? How does a thermocouple work?

Before selecting a thermocouple, we need to address the following questions: 1) What is the temperature range you wish to measure, and what are the upper and lower limits? 2) Which object’s temperature do you intend to measure? The first question will help you categorize the application.

Applications of Temperature Sensors in Temperature Control Systems

In a temperature control system, the temperature sensor functions much like the nerve endings in a human body; the entire system’s operation hinges on the data it collects. Such systems can simultaneously monitor parameters including pressure, humidity, liquid level, and flow rate, with all measurements derived from sensors. Though small, these sensors play an indispensable role.

On the Advantages of Non-Contact Temperature Measurement

Advantages of non-contact temperature measurement: The upper limit of measurement is not constrained by the temperature resistance of the sensing element, so in principle there is no limit to the maximum measurable temperature. For temperatures above 1800°C, non-contact methods are predominantly employed. With advances in infrared technology, radiative thermometry has gradually expanded from the visible spectrum into the infrared range, and it is now widely used for temperatures below 700°C up to ambient conditions, offering very high resolution.

What is a contact-type temperature sensor?

The sensing element of a contact-type temperature sensor maintains good thermal contact with the object being measured and is commonly referred to as a thermometer. The thermometer achieves thermal equilibrium through conduction or convection, allowing its reading to directly indicate the temperature of the measured object.

Introduction to Temperature Sensors

A temperature sensor (temperature transducer) is a device that senses temperature and converts it into a usable output signal. As the core component of temperature-measuring instruments, temperature sensors come in a wide variety of types. Based on the measurement method, they can be classified into two major categories: contact-type and non-contact-type; according to the materials of the sensing element and the characteristics of the electronic components, they are further divided into resistance thermometers and thermocouples.
